You are exactly right Joe. That to me is newsworthy. Admittedly "LPD conducts CIT training" is good stuff too, but not on page one. Especially after they added the afterword about how many folks suffer from mental issues and law enforcement seems a touch too "hands on" when dealing with them. But perhaps that's another issue entirely.

The newsmedia tends to focus on the big issues, usually in a negative connotation, for instance Haiti, elections in Massachusettes and health care and other "big" stories. Since there are frequently negative spins, it takes a lot of shorter "good" stories to overcome all the negativity. It's already begun, but I would encourage poeple to continue to watch the Haiti. Gazing into my crystal ball (recently back from the shop) reveals more and more anti-American and by proxy anti-First World sentiment about how little aid is going in and how somebody somewhere will be making a profit on it. Please note I would be happy if the crystal ball is still malfunctioning.

Just another example of the newsmedia promoting a negative image, instead of showing how much money and effort the U.S and the average citizen are dumping in to that particular problem area. I watched with interest about the Pittsburgh mayor heling with the adoptees, the $100 million the Persident promised, and the $15 million or so private citizens have donated to the Red Cross and similar agencies. I'll bet there's more coverage of how bad it is vs. how much better it has become.

Evidently, they didn't care to mention that the text service is somewhat flawed. I've heard from numerous individuals that they didn't get the text until the next day regarding the tornado, and I as a university employee, along with my girlfriend who was also employed at the university at the time, didn't get the text message until that evening regarding the tornado, and I never once received a text regarding this incident, though I've gotten numerous "test" texts.

Pardon me if I wonder if that was the best way to send word regarding a clear and imminent danger to the community, and more importantly, to the residence halls. Clearly, if I'm getting the texts checking to make sure the system is working, but not getting the actual important information, something is severely wrong.

God forbid the Boom upset UW's bureaucracy, though.
